I was thinking of going to a Goodwill or thrift store and buy an old electric blanket and plugging it into a temp controller. (my basement gets down to 45-50 deg in the winter) I figure it will cover both carboys and also insulate and protect from light at the same time. Has anyone tried this?

Heating pads are often mentioned but no reason a heated blanket would not work. Make sure it does not have an auto-shut-off and that the temp controller switching it off does not make it default to off.
