As an alternative to better bottles or buckets, I'll put in my recommendation for the Speidel fermenters. I used one for the first time this morning and it was a breeze. The spigot threaded on easily and no leaks at all, and the top screws on quickly as well. I ordered the 30-liter version so that I don't need to worry about wild fermentations with 5-gallon batches. Admittedly, the Speidels aren't cheap, but they are well made and very easy to use. Transporting them is also easy with the two side handles.
My only gripe (apart from the price) is that there are no volume markings on the Speidel fermenters, but these should be easy to add on my own. Check out Morebeer if you're interested. They are my local brew shop, but offer free shipping for orders over a certain dollar amount - I think $50.
