Well hit up my local thrift store today and scored 2 glass carboys for 10 bucks....was super stoked untill I cleaned em up and noticed one has about a 4 inch crack in the bottom starting to go up the side of one. After reading alot of very scary storys of these things breaking and sliting wrists ect...Im guessing I should just toss the thing?

Cheers

Yep, pitch the cracked one man. Not only would it be a potential safety hazard and the internal surface of the crack would be impossible to sanitize, 5 gal of sweet wort all over the floor is an absolute mess *when* it breaks. ;)

ya thats the way i was leaning but i was hoping someone might contradict my instincts haha

Cheers

ya, 10 bucks for a single carboy is a steal.

Dont risk the cracked one at all.. You are just asking for problems, matter if it is sanitisation or how sturdy it is.

5 gallons of wort is such a mess lol...I never want to relive that event and wouldn't wish it on anyone. First you're pissed cause the beer is gone, then you realize you have a million glass shards all over. Not fun. So yeah, pitch the cracked one. Or better yet, take it to a field and just slightly tap the bottom with a hammer. The entire thing will implode. I did this with a cracked one, just the tiniest tap to the bottom will do it. It was fun to see.
