Carb stone without carb lid?

Has anybody used a vinyl hose with a carb stone on the end, and simply attached it to the gas side dip tube?

I ask because I don't have a lot of vertical height in my keg refrigerators, to use a carb lids, and this would be a solution.

That's been done quite a bit - predates carb caps, actually. Only issue is the potential for driving beer back up into a regulator if one dials the pressure down sans any check valve in the gas line...
