I distinctly remember setting the ignition timing on a buddy's drag camaro. My hand got a little too close to a plug wire with cracked insulation and I was told later that my head banged the underside of the hood about a 20 times before I managed to let go. All I remember is opening my eyes and realizing I was flat on my back. I suppose that explains a few things :drunk:

Yeah, it's pretty SHOCKING (pun intended) when you aren't expecting it, and it's almost as bad when you know it's going to happen...

I wouldn't advise it to anyone unless they like a bit of excitement ;)

If you want to help, then help. Dont make a blanket statement like that to give your input more merit.

Sorry! You're right. I was a little druck when I posted that.

I suspect one of the coils, since two of the plugs looked fouled. I should have posted not to mix up the plugs so he could no which one.

Update:

I ended up replacing the TPS, plugs, and one of the spark pug wires (noticed a small defect in the insulation while pulling the plugs, it was probably nothing, but what the hell....) My car has now moved form "lawn ornament" status to "putt around town" status.

I went for a little test drive, and while pretty drivable, I still noticed a few problems:
- While no longer spitting out black crud, I still have a pretty bad vibration. I notice it more when I am at low RPM's, (<2500) esp. when I am trying to maintain speed.
- Acceleration is smooth at higher RPM's, coasting is fine, and the car idles fine in park. But when I shift it into gear, or come to a stop after driving, the RPM's drop and occasionaly the engine will stall.

Thanks guys for all your help so far! If you have any more ideas on this, please share:D

I would start with disconnecting the battery and letting the car sit over night. The computer sometimes gets pretty confused when new sensors are installed and disconnecting the battery on a car of this age will reset the computer. Chances are, that won't solve the problem, but occasionally it does.

My latest car report :D

I found one bad coil pack, and there was another that seemed kinda weak, so I ended up just replacing all 3, replaced the catalytic converter because I noticed it was glowing cherry red after test driving it with the new coil packs. Also replaced the PCV valve on a recomendation. I also reset the computer as sugested above. While the car seems to run much better now (almost in the state it was before it went kaput last week) I still notice:

-hard vibrating, almost like if you are in too high a gear (although I am fairly sure thats not the problem) at low RPM's, but at high RPM's it is smooth and sounds great
-takes a little longer to accelerate than it used to

I will be going on an extended drive on Friday and see if I notice anything else, but until then, any input is welcome. I am almost at the point of just taking the damn thing in as much as I hate to do that.....
