I have never grown or harvested hops before, however a new lady at work overheard that i make beer and asked if I would like some hops. She said her son used to brew and sold his equipment but he has 4 varieties of hops still growing in her back yard that i am welcome to. So is there a way to guess what varieties they are besides purely on taste/smell and what are the obvious things I should look for to know they are ready/even good?

Not really a way to tell untill you use them. I'm guessing though, that her son should be able to tell you. Ask her to ask him.

They're ready to pick when they have a papery feel to them. You may want to head over this week or next to check them out.

Take a lot at my recent hop ripeness post post some pictures and I might be able to tell you variety Cheers
