I have a chance to purchase it for $30... i do partial mash now and want to move to all grain at some point. I assume these don't hold temps worth a squat?

Have you considered batch sparging in a converted cooler? They are pretty cheap to make and you would probably be more happy in the long run.

Get a cooler and convert. The double bucket system is terrible. Trust me. It will not hold temp, and you will have to use tons of rice hulls to avoid a stuck sparge on a normal beer. Forget entirely about mashing more than 14 lbs or using wheat/rye/oats. I put up with this crap for about 25 batches and the best thing I ever did was to upgrade to a 10 gallon round cooler with a false bottom.

WOW! I was just going to point you to Kmart to get the 52 qt. Coleman Xtreme. I got mine for $29.99 (in-store). I just went to their website and they are now $55! I think Homebrewers made a run on these and drove the price up! LOL

Go with the cooler. I find that even my insulated cooler mash tun will lose a few degrees over an hour, so I can't imagine what a plain bucket would do.

The other option is to get those and throw some cheap insulation on them.

Another vote for cooler. They're super easy to convert, and if you get a halfway decent one it'll hold temps like a champ. You can batch or fly sparge and not worry.
