Long story short: brewed a few times in 2010. Girlfriend bought me a kit. Moved cities, haven't brewed since. Brewed up a Brewer's Best American Cream Ale kit last Friday before I started reading these forums.

  • Yeast was one dry packet of Nottingham ale yeast
  • Pitched the yeast at 74 degrees
  • I didn't use a yeast starter
  • The yeast was at least 18 months old (but just within its "brew by date")
  • I haven't taken an additional SG reading, but airlock activity has been low
  • Has been fermenting for a week at a steady 66 degrees
  • Very little sediment at the bottom of the carboy (photo taken today: https://twitter.com/theSlex/status/314949579399385088/photo/1 )

What options do I have? Will adding corn sugar help? Can I pick up a couple packets of dry yeast and throw those in?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

The only way to know whether your beer is fermenting is to take gravity readings. Once you do that, then you can tell if the yeast is fermenting.

Good looking wort. Picture doesn't show the krausen layer, but your brew may be near the end of fermentation. Take an SG reading and another in two days. Will probably take another week to finish completely.
