Can I peek, or should I wait?

Just got home after a few days on the road in my cider smells AWESOME. The safale S-04 is really a nice yeast and I don't mind having it fermenting away in my home office the least.

Anyway, my primary is a brew bucket. Lots of great fermentation going. Airlock bubbles up ever five seconds or so. I really want to open it up and take a peek and see what it looks like as the first time I opened the primary to see what was going on there was a thick mat of krausen. Now I'm simply curious so see the action is all. I don't know if I should just sit on my hands and wait until primary fermentation slows down and its time to rack. Am I risking contamination/oxidation if I open the bucket now to take a peek or will all that krausen protect the juice from oxidation until the CO2 pushes the air back out?

I love the ease and convenience of the brew buckets but I'll be damned if doesn't cut back on the fun of watching the wild yeasties do their thing!

Get a spray bottle and fill it with a StarSan solution. Spray the lid before you open it, then the upper edge (inside, above the beer) of the bucket and the bottom of the lid before you shut it. Sanitize anything to you dip in it to sample.

It's what I do and I've had no issues. Cheers!

If you don't think it is done then I would wait. I read on these forums that cider oxidizes faster than beer.
