Can I bend a thermometer like this?

Or if it would stop working if I bent it?

get a cheap one and try. if it works, you can get a more expensive one to do it on. if it doesn't, you only screwed up a cheap one and didn't waste too much money...

If you could get it bent without kinking it, it should still work. Those thermometers are usually a rate of change type so there is an internal element that is calibrated to the gauge. I say try it but don't be surprised if you break it.

At the angle it will be it will be facing the ceiling and I would have to get on a chair to read it.

That's what I did. Don't buy the cheapy one from Wal-Mart either. I broke that the second time I used it. Go ahead and spend 30 bucks on one that isn't going to break if it's accidentally submerged in water.
