Can anyone tell me how I calculate the amount of malt needed for a SMaSH BIAB?

I have been using hopville (now known is brewtoad.com) to calculate the amount of maris otter I need for the desired OG/FG.

I am wondering if the amount of malt I introduce there...and the info I get there on AG/FG, can be used for BIAB brewing too?

Like in the case of a 4-gallon batch, 9 lbs of malt gives me 1.053 OG and 1.016 FG (calculated with 65% efficiency).

Malt or grains have a certain gravity potential. You then use your efficiency to calculate how much you will extract from it. Once you figure your extract yield you just have to figure out how many lbs you need to hit your numbers (OG)

BIAB is not that much different then using a 3 vessel system. The same formulas should work to calculate grain, you just need to know your efficiency.

A good estimate is that for a 5-gallon batch, 10 pounds of light base malts (Pilsner, 2-Row, Pale Ale, etc.) will give you an OG of about 1.050 at 70% efficiency.

(10 x 36 x 0.7) / 5

In other words, weight of grain times extract potential times efficiency divided by volume.
