I've been using the following formula from beersmith.com to calculate the calories in my homebrewed beer:

Calorie_from_alcohol = 1881.22 * FG * (OG-FG)/(1.775-OG)

Calories_from_carbs = 3550.0 * FG * ((0.1808 * OG) + (0.8192 * FG) – 1.0004)

Total calories – just add the Calories_from_alcohol to Calories_from_carbs

I'd actually assumed that this formula was valid for fermented juice and cider, but I've recently begun to doubt this. Does anyone know if this beer formula also works for cider?

It would certainly be valid for dry cider since there are no carbs in dry cider. It would probably be valid for sweetened cider if you assume the unfermentables in beer have the same calorific content as the sugar in cider.

Is this for 12 oz? 16 oz?

So, I made a blueberry cider with just apple juice and blueberries and yeast.

OG - 1.047
FG - 1.000

Blueberry Cider
Calorie_from_alcohol = 1881.22 * 1.000 * (1.047-1.000)/(1.775-1.047)=
1881.22 x 1 x (.047 /.728)
1881.22 x .065 = 121.45

Calories_from_carbs = 3550.0 * 1.000 * ((0.1808 * 1.047) + (0.8192 * 1.000) – 1.0004)
3550.0 * 1.000 * ((0.1893) + (0.8192) – 1.0004)
3550.0 * (.0081) = 28.755

Total: 121.45 + 28.755 = 150.205

Is this for 12 oz?

Is this right?

Seems right. The formula's for 12 oz., but this can easily bee scaled to any size you want. Just divide by 12 and multiple by the new amount in ounces. Divide by 355 and multiply by amount in milliliters if you're a metric nut ;)

I'd try an online calculator to double check your numbers. It never hurts! If you're interested, I also have an Excel spreadsheet that keeps track of my batches and handles the calculations for me. I'd be glad to send it to you. Your blueberry cider sounds delicious, by the way!

Shameless plug: I've started work on an application version of my spreadsheet that will have many new features and do many more calculations. I'm aiming for it to be like a scaled-down version of Beersmith. I figure it can help others besides me, so I'm planning on releasing it as a Windows desktop/tablet and Android app in the $1-2 range. Look for it in the next 12 months :)

Bringing this old thread back to life to see if anyone can validate the info (I'm not sure where some of the numbers in the eqs come from) or point me in the right direction for calculating the amount of Calories & Carbs in my 100% AJ/FAJC ciders. (No backsweetening or additions)

I can easily provide the total starting:
Carbs
Calories
Sugar(grams)

OG & FG

But not sure exactly what to do with this info.

Thanks and cheers!

do it by ABW instead of volume. beersmith is off on that. and alcohol is 7 calories a GRAM, carbs are 4 calories a GRAM.

Is there a 1-to-1 conversion of Sugar Grams to Alcohol Grams during fermentation?
