Rotting Christ - AEALO

Some epic black metal from Greece. There is some really cool chanting in the mix by a Greek all female choir.

If there is anything I like about metal... it's got to be the ART. Dio :rockin:

In the days before the internet I used to go to record stores and buy albums all the time just based on the artwork, with no idea who the band was or what they sounded like. My friend and I used to play a game where we would play albums for each other and try to guess what the cover art looked like.

Amon Amarth - Stand Up To Go Down

This is from an EP that came with Amon Amarth's latest album. The EP is called Under The Influence and has 4 songs, each one styled like a different band (Priest, Sabbath, Motorhead, AC/DC). This is the song in the style of AC/DC. Great party song!

This band has been hitting all the year-end lists, and I meant to get around to this album earlier this year. Man, I wish I had been jamming this all year! Solid OSDM without sounding like they are just ripping everyone off.

Hey Headbanger. Do you normally compile a year end list? I try to do my top 20 at the end of every year. I like to go back and look at what I thought was my top 5 at the end of any given year, and what has changed dramatically with a couple years of listening. I can tell you my top 5-10 from 2011-2012 are VERY different than what I would put now.
That is the one thing I think is weird about year-end lists in general. Really, I think you should make a list of the best albums of 2014 in 2016. Saying something is the best after only having a couple months to listen seems very counterintuitive to me. But maybe I am thinking about it too much. I DO love looking at others’ lists as it gives me a guide to stuff I may have missed.

I usually try to put something together each year and I also enjoy seeing other peoples picks for the same reasons you mentioned. I haven't really had time to hash anything out yet but your post inspired me to think back through what I've really enjoyed this year.

Also I was fortunate enough to acquire a new amp this year and, as a result, have been glued to my listening room whenever having some time to spare as my system has never sounded better, amazing in fact. Resultantly I can say without doubt that the records I've chosen here have immense listening value, a couple might take repeated spins to digest fully while others grab you by the short hairs from the first spin and just don't let go.

Overall it's been a very good year, especially for power/heavy genres. Put all of these on your playlist, hit random play and prepare to be blown away repeatedly...

Your turn ;)

Well, I compiled my best of list (for now) of 2014, and honestly I surprised myself. There are a lot less underground bands that made the list this year. But I decided there is no use trying to be kvlt with myself! This is what I liked in 2014.

1) The Lord Weird SLOUGH FEG - Digital Resistance
2) Trap Them - Blissf*cker
3) Godflesh - A World Lit Only by Fire
4) Horrendous - Ecdysis
5) Eyehategod - EHG
6) Goatwhore - Constricting Rage of the Merciless
7) Behemoth - The Satanist
8) Revocation - Deathless
9) Thantifaxath - Sacred White Noise
10) The Atlas Moth - The Old Believers
11) Midnight - No Mercy for Mayhem
12) Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vestusta III
13) Fallujah - The Flesh Prevails
14) Electric Wizard - Time to Die
15) Vallenfyre - Splinters
16) Occultation - Silence in the Ancestral House
17) Triptykon - Melana Chasmata
18) Thou - Heathen
19) Mutilation Rites - Harbinger
20) Misery Index - The killing Gods

Of note, in no order:

Krieg - Transient
Tombs - Savage Gold
At the Gates - At War with Reality
Swans - To Be Kind
Pallbearer - Foundations of Burden
Hour of Penance - Regicide
Myopic / Torrid Husk - Crawling Mountain Apogee

I miss this band! 2015 will be five years since they broke up. Bout time for a reunion!

HM-2 distortion - Check, Death Metal riffage - check, gang vocals - check, Wicked Solo - check, Breakdown - check. This track has all that, but it doesn't sound like generic deathcore BS.

Appears this band is shedding a lot of its hardcore influences with this record, but it still rips. If you like it buy it from the band, link below.

Nice Best of 2014 list. Checking out that new Pallbearer album on youtube led me to the new Earth album, so thanks for that.

I like it. I heard one of their songs on Liquid Metal the other day. The vocals remind me a bit of Death (the band).

Not sure if you guys have ever heard of this band out of Florida, but they're pretty friggin crunchy.

I decided to listen to this album on the way into work this morning. I think you all should as well. Wonderful way to start the day!

Awesome album.

I'll put this here... not sure if it fits, but hopefully we don't have to get into genre wars over here.

Genre Wars be damned. This band slays live. I own most of their albums, and when I play them, all I can think is, man I wish this was as good as them live. Not hating on their recorded music, but it just doesn't capture what they do in a live setting.

Agreed, they actually played here in town a few years ago with Wolvhammer at a freaking dive bar and there were like... 30 people there. It was sad to see so little people turn out, but the show was floccing awesome.

Here's two from one of my favorite now-defunct metal bands (***PLEASE NOTE - HUGE VOLUME DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO VIDEOS (2nd is louder) YOU'VE BEEN WARNED***):
