California Ale Yeast died in shipping?

Hello all I have a real fast question. I just got my package from Northern Brewer on Friday. I refrigerated the yeast as soon as I got it. Brewed yesterday after taking the yeast out of refrigeration for the recommended 3-6 hours. It has now been around 16 hours and there does not appear to be any activity in the carboy. Has the yeast died during the shipping? Or should I wait and be patient. The yeast is a liquid White Labs California Ale Yeast WLP001. Please help as I would really hate to hear that my brew is going to be a casualty.
 
Was the yeast shipped with a cold pack? Did you make a starter, is so what size and via what method? What was the OG and batchsize of your brew?

Chances are the yeast is likely fine, and is just severely under pitched. I've seen activity in as little as 4hrs and as long as 12hrs from a appropriate sized starter done on a stirplate. If you just chucked in the contents of the White Labs vial I'd wait at least 24-48hrs before deciding it's dead. If you don't see anything by 48hrs go to the LHBS and get another vial of WLP001, or Wyeast 1056 or Safale US-05 and re-pitch.

Allow 48-72 hours for activity. For next time always use a starter when using liquid yeast!
 
Yeast don't start to be debilitated until about 120F, and don't start dying off until prolonged 140F temps.

Your yeast are fine. Fermentation can easily take a good 48 hours before it starts showing visible signs, and even longer than that with stressed yeast like you probably have. I made some wort last weekend that I was fermenting at the very low end of the yeast's viable temp, and it took 4 days before I saw a krausen ring and 6 days before any airlock activity.

Patience! If you get to day 3-4 without any activity, it might be time to investigate, but for now you are well within normal parameters!
 
I've used california ale yeast several times...its always a slow starter for fermenting...almost 48 hours the last time I used it..even with a starter
