How much c02 does a 5 gallon carboy emit?
Enough to keep it in a room with a dog pen
 
I keep them in a bedroom closet... the only thing that would be more usefull would be to hook it up to the planted aquaium to inject co2 into the water.

I would say it produces less co2 per day while activly fermenting than the dog does.
 
Remember that it is CO (Carbon Monoxide) that is poisonous to humans and animals. CO2 is not poisonous in the least, but it is heavier than O2, so it does displace oxygen upward. As long as you have enough oxygen to breathe, though, the CO2 is harmless.

It would take a metric sh*tton of active fermenters to produce enough CO2 to fill a room!
 
how much, would you assume, just for curiosity

Assuming that CO2 is the only thing leaving the beer as it ferments:

5 gals of water weighs roughly 41.5 lbs.
Therefore, 5 gals of 1.050 OG wort would weigh 43.6 lbs and the finished 1.005 FG beer would be 41.7 lbs, thus producing 1.9 lbs of CO2. That would be about 15 cubic feet at STP.

They could be considered "poisonous", only in slight different mechanisms.

CO is poisonous because hemoglobin has a higher affinity for it than it does O2, therefore hemoglobin gets "loaded" with CO causing a lower blood oxygen level.

If the air has a high level of CO2 (say that CO2-containing air has displaced more oxygen-rich air) then the exchange of O2 for CO2 (produced by the body during cellular respiration) is impaired which also means a lower blood oxygen level.

So slightly different mechanism (displacement versus impaired exchange), but the result is the same--low blood oxygen levels.

As long as you have enough oxygen to breathe, though, the CO2 is harmless.
The same goes for CO if you think about it.
