This is proving more difficult than I thought. The places that have good/free shipping either don't carry Maris Otter in 50lb sacks, or their prices on the bags are stupid. The places that have good prices have crappy shipping costs.

Any recommendations?

You brew a lot, right?

North Country Malt usues freight shipping for orders over 200 pounds--should be much more economical than Fed-ex ground or UPS ground.

Actually, since you're just starting out w/ whole grains and a mill (right?), 200 lbs is not a totally unreasonable amount, I guess.

What's been the range on the quotes less shipping? I've been thinking of getting some M.O. in bulk from my LHBS and they sell it for $42.50 for #50(.85 lb). They sell out of the bins for $1.69 a lb so this would certainly be the better deal for me.

www.brewyourownbrew.com if it's worth investigation on their shipping costs.

Contact a local brewery and see if they are willing to let you piggy back on their orders. Out here in the west lots of grain moves through Denver and so a variety of grains can be selected.

I second north country, their prices per lb are good as well.

My local joint has MO for $40 for 55lb sack, no shipping necessary. Ahhhh. I actually started with 2-row for only $30/50lbs. It might be worth a drive if you have any stores around you.

Check that on my LHBS - It's $44.99 for a 55# bag (.81 per lb). I added it to my cart and it said $6.50 for shipping. Then I updated it to my son's address in VA and it still said $6.50. Might be worth a shot Evan. But you might get a call from them informing you of a problem with the shipping fee :D.

A lot? Is 31 batches in <9 months a lot?

Anyway, I don't think I need 200 lbs right now. Just wanna 50lb sack of Maris Otter, and the other stuff I'll buy by the pound.

Listermann has free shipping, but it's $76 for a 50lb sack.
AHS has $5.99 shipping, but it's $54 for a 40lb sack
Midwest has $45 for a 55lb sack, but their shipping is $24.
Northern Brewer has $50 for a 50lb sack, but their shipping is $26.
Morebeer has $45 for a 55lb sack, but their shipping is an absurd $55.

So it looks like Midwest has the best overall pricing. Am I missing anyone?

Damn, you're right. I'm gonna try it out, just to see what happens. If they call me and want more money, I'll just cancel it. Thanks bro.

Yeah, I'm in good with a local brewmaster, too. Gonna talk to him about some yeast tomorrow, so maybe then...

Coincidentally, I just ordered a 25 kg (55 lb) sack of Marris Otter today. Cost me $32 Canadian. I just called up a malting company in town, and they were more than happy to sell one sack at a time to a homebrewer. So if you happen to be near a malting company, check with the source!

I ordered a 55lb sack of MO for 35 bucks. The online site didnt tell me shipping costs until I got the sack delivered. 35 bucks for the malt, 35 for shipping.

Oh well, Im still paying less than the LHBS

Chimone, that wasn't from the Tucson BYOB store then I'd assume?

You can still order a single bag of Maris Otter from North Country for cheaper than most of the prices I've seen here. It'll be sent through FedEx, and the shipping won't be cheap, but the price of the malt itself will be cheap enough to offset that.

Dude, the closest HBS is 1.5 hrs away. God only knows how close the nearest maltster is...

Check. Maybe there is something closer than you think, and they will ship for a decent price. Just a suggestion to lower your cost, man.

no. I think Gary might actually give me a deal if I can make it up there to pick up a sack though. Im thinking maybe 40 bucks for MO. its 44 online, but I buy ALOT from him so who knows

.72 cents a pound for MO aint too shabby

You called it. Got an e-mail from Gary this morning. Shipping to VA is $24. Still cheaper, per pound, than most other places, though.

I just checked Midwest again. Their base price for the sack is the same, $45. If I get it sent to my office, shipping is only $21.50. Brings my total cost per pound down to $1.20. Looks like this is the best choice.

Does anyone have any idea what the difference between Crisp MO and Glean Eagle's MO is? They're the same price, but the description on the Glean Eagle says it's a "more select" version.

EDIT: Google search comes up with: "This malt has slightly higher colour and an even richer flavour than the English grown Maris. With similar superb brewing properties and excellent flavour this malt makes it the perfect choice for an 80/- or premium British Best Bitter."

Going with that.

Glean Eagle's eh

Hmm....I thought Maris Otter was part of the Crisp family. Well right on, you learn something new everyday.

You got the specs on Glean Eagle's Malt? Protein, moisture....etc etc

Sounds like Gleneagle is owned by Crisp, but malted in Scotland.

Moisture (%): 2.9

FGE (dry): 82.4

Seriously, check North Country Malt: http://www.northcountrymalt.com/pages.php?pageid=6

The Fawcett (Or Hugh Baird if you choose) Maris otter is only about $30 for a 55lb bag, plus shipping. When I called there a few weeks ago for an order, they quoted me $17 shipping to MI, and since VA is probably about the same distance to NY as MI is, I'd be you can get a bag from there for under $50.

Unless I'm missing something, you're mistaken. Those per-pound prices on that page are for commercial customers. If you click on the "homebrewer" links, you end up paying over $50 for a 50lb bag.

Am I wrong? Is there some other way to order? Because all I see for homebrewers is the Fawcett MO @ 1.05/lb.

You can get it in 50lb bags as well, if you DL the catalog it lists it. $30 is correct, they have 2 row for $26 as well. I don't know about shipping though.

FWIW I just got 18lbs of grain and 2 pounds of hops to PA and it was $10 shipping.
