I have 5 gallons of Apfelwein in a fermenting bucket. It's been fermenting for 2 months. I moved it out from behind everything to get ready to transfer it to a keg. I noticed there are dead bugs in the airlock. Not sure what they are or how they got in there.

Is this a common occurence? Is the batch ruined?

I've occasionally found a dead fruit fly or two in my airlock, especially when they are really bad around here around late July. Never been an issue for me, but I would assume that if some of the airlock liquid got sucked back in that it could cause an issue. Take a sample and if it smells or tastes like vinegar then you'll know what happened although I *highly* doubt it is ruined.

You can send half to me if you would like a second opinion.

Dead squirrels in your brew can cause some off flavours but you won't have to worry about those fruit flies, or whatever they are. In most cases, that airlock is doing its job in keeping them out, but even if one or two were sucked in, it's nothing to worry about.
