That's exactly what I was thinking...wins against what? I was kinda thinking it be vs a dirty diaper or something.

Stout was considered a separate label for a long time. As in, Stout, Ale, and Lager. I've actually been to a few brewpubs that still like to say "the finest Stouts, Ales, and Lagers..." Blackstone in Nashville has it over their entrance.

Stouts weren't considered lagers (unless brewed with a lager yeast, which some are), if that is what you thought it meant.

No I have just never heard that needed to be filled in. What stouts are done with lager yeast? Never heard of that either.

Tropical stout :)

That is one of hallmarks of the style, actually.

If you haven't heard of the style, the BJCP considers to be a type of Foreign Extra Stout. A classic example would be Dragon Stout from Jamaica.

But I'm pretty sure they weren't talking about a tropical stout in the article, so I should probably add that the term "ale" DOES actually mean something very different today from what it used to.

I thought I knew my styles pretty good... BJCP app where are you.

I've been to plenty of brewpubs where I'd have preferred a Bud over thier crappy, diacetyl-filled and too-green beer.

Same... I left 3/4 of a beer on the bar at a Portlane ME brewpub recently. The gf did the same, since it was two beers with the same problems we knew there was no point in trying to switch it for a new beer.

There is a brewpub in every city like that I think.
