So I just bought myself a fancy new refractometer, since I was tired of taking larger samples for my hydrometer. I calibrated it to distilled water just fine, but when I took a reading of my ready-to-bottle pale ale, it read 8.2% brix! Worried that fermentation had gotten stuck, I took a hydrometer reading, which read a healthy 1.012, which translates to 3.07 brix (there was lactose in the recipe, hence the higher final gravity).

Am I reading my refractometer wrong? Is there a reason that I would get such a huge difference in reading?
