Hey,

I just finished moving my very first Brewer's Best kit (IPA) to primary fermentation. However, I'm a little confused as to how the siphon and bottling setup work. Can anyone who has used one of these kits give a little more detail (the directions don't seem to cover this area) as to exactly how it works and what each piece is used for? I'm mainly interested in how to move the beer from the fermentation bucket to the bottling bucket and then eventually to the bottle.

Thank you!

I have the same kit and the siphon can either be used like a pump or simply a siphon. I practiced with the siphon first with some water just to see how it worked. Just start pulling the tube in the middle a couple times to get the siphon going and your off, place the clear hose on the end that has the curved piece, i viewed that as the handle. Once fermentation is done, just start pumping away into the bottling bucket, but make sure the siphon is not touching the bottom of the primary fermenter, you don't want to suck up any sediment. Hope this helps, im assuming we have the same siphon. Long clear plastic tube, with another tube in the middle that you can pull up and down, is this what your siphon looks like

Make sure that the lowest point of the auto siphon tube is higher than the highest point in what you're siphoning into. Easiest put, the bottom of the source carboy/bucket/vessel should be above the highest point of the receiving carboy/bucket/vessel. That way, once you have the siphon going, you just need to keep lowering the end of the source tube.

For the first few times I used the auto siphon, I used it as a pump. Now I'm using it as you're supposed to. If you use it as a pump, you run the risk of injecting air into the wort. Using as a siphon, the risk of that happening is virtually nil.

Be sure to have the black cap on the end of the siphon and only "pump" it once, twice max to get it going. Do a bing/google search for: how to use an auto siphon with home brewing and you get good results.
