It will be interesting to see how this unfolds as some of the details aren't real clear. Similar to the Indie hops deal where they 'donated' big bucks to help fund aroma hop breeding at Oregon State with a new variety that was released this fall, who is that available to, and what will be the price?

My understanding is it will likely be a licensed variety, much like apple varieties have come to be in the past decade or two. I guess we won’t really know until it happens though.

Licensing would be fine, but that's not really how it sounds to me:

“Research to develop and release hop cultivars with no intellectual property protection ensures that all growers have access to high quality, disease-resistant cultivars they need to sustain production at levels required by brewers. In the long-term, this important program will fuel efforts of existing legacy growers as well as nascent hop growing industries throughout the U.S. The program will also fulfill an essential stewardship strategy by providing foundational germplasm for public and private breeding programs. Even the smallest brewers will be able to source ingredients they need to produce that truly local pint.”

Seems like they want to hire a single breeder/facility, though.

Still good news.

Apimyces, my response was with regards to the Oregon State Aroma hop program, bot the USDA hop breeding program.

Was I reading up the wrong site? Got a link for me?

Check out B-Hoppy’s response.

There are two programs at Oregon State, one is the aroma hops breeding program headed by Shaun Townsend and the other is the USDA hop breeding program headed by John Henning. The USDA is looking to hire an additional breeding support specialist, which will be primarily located at the Prosser research station in Washington.

The OSU breeding program recently received money from Indie Hops. The OSU program is in the process of releasing a new variety but the concern is whether the varieties coming from that program will be licensed (proprietary) varieties or publicly-available to everyone.

On the other hand, the USDA only breeds publicly-available varieties, available to everyone not just specific people.
