Ok, so I usually use the Countertop PM method put forth by BYO in a 2 gal coleman cooler. I'm an idiot and didn't check my grain sock supply. I have none and am about to mash in.

So I need some lautering advice:

I'm planning on using some cheese cloth (brewing partner heading to store right now), but are their any other possibilities?

Some of my thoughts:

1 aluminum hot tray + knife= lots of holes. push down in. Will this add any off tastes?

2. Paper plate + knife = lots of holes. Will it hold up?

Any thoughts??

Cheers,

I'm not versed in the Countertop PM Method, but I'd think if the aluminum tray is clean, it'd be fine. People use Aluminum pots all the time. I doubt the paper plate would hold up...and if it doesn't that could have some nasty consequences.

Cheese cloth seems like it'd work well. Hope this helps :drunk:

So we went with the cheese cloth. So far, so good. Actually, better than the grain sock. Didn't have to recirculate much at all. Thanks for all the input. I"ll keep the updates comin'.

Cheese cloth and kitchen strainer will work fine for now.

You might want to try the Bucket in a bottle bucket for larger PM next time. Just buy a brew bucket and drill a bunch of 1/8 holes in it for your lauter tun. When I do PM's I mash in a 3 gal pot which I then put in a cooler wrapped in towels to hold the temp for the mash. You then transfer the mash to your bucket and use another bottling bucket to hold your sparge water. By using tubing attached to the bottling spigots you can adjust the flow for the sparge. This is an inexpensive way to do large PM or even AG.
