sorry i looked around but didn't find an answer for this so again if its redundant my apologies. New to the wine making scene and learning alot here. My question is, I have access to beer growlers (1/2 gal) dark glass. Can these be used for long term storage with wine. say using the screw cap and some kind of shrinkage to make it air tight. Just a newbie so was wondering , thanks for any help you can provide.
 
I think the most important issue here is how much oxygen the growler caps let get pass through. If they don't seal out oxygen then they would not be suitable for long term storage. Just because the caps don't leak liquid does not mean they keep oxygen out, O2 is a very small molecule and can permeate many apparently solid substances.
 
Sure can. Fill them high and make all attempts to seal the top. I have mead stored for a few years in growlers showing little to no significant effects of oxidation.
 
so if the caps i have seen for sale - with a good plastic rubber seal inside should be suitable. do they eve
n make a shrink wrap that would fit a growlers top?

So is there anything to offset tht O2 seepage on a growler lid?
 
Just bite the bullet and get bottles and a hand corker. You don't want to be serving wine out of a beer growler.
