Picked up an old 20oz. or so bottle from a now extinct brewery from my hometown in an antique shop today. The bottle is in good condition, really heavy glass and dated 1905. I thought it would be cool to collect a few of these types of bottles and use a couple with each batch I brew up. Anyone have experience using old bottles like these?

I had the same idea awhile ago but gave up when I saw the prices for those bottles - $20 each or more - and the thought of them exploding due to being so old. But man would it be cool to bottle a cellar-worthy beer like an RIS in an antique bottle as a gift.

I snapped a quick picture before I headed to work this morning. Not the best, but you can see that it takes a crown cap. Nothing real special about the bottle other than it says "Cumberland Brewing Company" on it with there logo. There was a ton of cool old beer bottles there but I tried to pick the one in the best shape and didn't have any nicks where the cap would go. The only thing that concerns me is you can feel where the bottle is made of two halves (if that makes sense). Maybe that was how they used to be made. But I figured since the glass is REALLY heavy and it lasted over 100 years it should be able to handle some homebrew. I won't be bottling for awhile yet, but if this one works good I'm sure I'll pick up a few more of the cooler looking ones for next time.
