Bottling - How Much Beer?

Gonna bottle my 5th batch tomorrow. I've always filled the bottles up to the beginning of the neck. Can I fill them higher? My worry is that they'll pop their tops. How about an inch from the top of the bottle, halfway between the beginning of the neck and the top?

PS - anybody know any good priming sugar/gravity/beer style calculators. The kind that tell you how much priming sugar to add for the gravity and style of the beer?

1) - Assuming you are using a bottling wand, just fill it right up to the lip of the bottle, and when you remove the wand there will be the perfect amount of headspace. This also gives you a very consistent amount bottle to bottle.

If your using a bottling wand fill to the top of the bottle and when you remove the wand you will have a satisfactory amount of head space.
