When its time to bottle and I have the priming sugar and beer in the bottling bucket, do I need to fit the bucket lid with an air lock or just place the lid on the bucket.

yeah I just get everything in place and bottle without a lid. Never had a problem yet (knock on wood). Plus, I like to give it a couple swirls with my paddle when bottling.

You'd also get a vacuum with the lid and an airlock I believe, which could make for tough bottling..I usually sit my sanitized lid on the bottling bucket for good measure. But then we've got five animals and God knows what floating around the air ;)

On a side note, I've been writing for 31 years and still can't spell vacuum..thanks spell check for keeping me in line.

I also set the lid on the bottling bucket while bottling. I don't like giving wild yeast & nasties the chance to settle into my beer while I'm bottling it.
