I just kegged a Tripel that will be transferred into a barrel project and aged for about a year. I had some extra beer so I put it into a couple of 16oz flip tops with 0.1oz sugar each to reach about 3.0vol. The only problem is the second bottle only got about 12oz which should yield about 3.4vol. I was planning on cracking the top to relieve the pressure part way through conditioning in hopes of lowering that closer to 3.0. Since I won't open these until the barrel project is done I just put them in my keezer at 40 degress F. At this temp when will conditioning be about half way done? I was thinking a couple of weeks but I have never bottled my beer, I have always kegged so I really have no idea.

I was also thinking that the additional head space will reduce the pressure on the liquid since gasses will compress whereas liquid won't, maybe the difference in actual carbonation would be unnoticeable anyway.

40°F is likely going to put the yeast into a coma.
I'd put the bottles in a bucket and set it in a 60-70°F environment for at least a week...

The bottle with less beer will be less carbonated because there's more room for CO2 in the headspace, hence less of it to dissolve in the beer.

My guess would be never.
I condition everything at 70°F or higher.
Move them to cold storage after 4 weeks at 65+.

This sounds right. However will there be more pressure in the bottle because CO2 gas exerts pressure moreso than dissolved CO2?
 
Ok, i’ll Pull em out and leave them at room temp for a few weeks. I’ll also skip the pressure relief step and see how it goes.
 
If your partly filled bottle does explode, I think it would do so with a lot more force than a standard bottle bomb. (There will be much more gas space in that one.) I hope you'll be taking safety precautions with storing and handling it.

I’m not worried about a bomb, it won’t be that over carbonated.
 
I bet Longmont has changed a bit since then. I moved here in 2001 and it’s a completely different place.
