About to brew a high OG double IPA (1.070-1.074).

For the other batches I've brewed (brown ale) a three piece airlock with bottling tubing has been sufficient for a blow off tube. Do I need to go bigger for this one?

It's a 5 gallon batch in a 6.5 gallon fermenter.

I always just use 1/2" tubing due to the fact that it fits perfectly over the nozzle of 3-piece airlocks. And going bigger would require rigging something up.

I think 1.5 gal worth of headspace with 1/2" tubing for a blowoff would be plenty. But that's just my opinion.

I agree with 3 toes, the blowoff with 1.5 gallons of headspace should be okay.

A 6.5g glass carboy takes an 1 1/4" ID tubing. Nice and snug fit in the neck.

Don't know about plastics. Or buckets.

I would never trust a small diameter tubing.
