I read in another post someone said they use a blender and turn the grain to dust is there anything wrong with that and is there some appliance I can just get from lowes or something instead of buying an expensive grain mill. I've always had the online supplier grind my grains before shipping and it seems I'm hearing it's noticibly better to grind right before you brew.

i'd be surprised if a blender would work? typically a grain mill crushes each grain once, rather than beating them to a pulp. i just imagine you'd tear the grain husks to shreds and most likely end up with stuck sparge (depending on how you mash).

I dont think even conditioning your grains would prevent the husks from turning into dust.

corona grain mills are much much cheaper than the typical roller grain mills. I had one of them and picked up an old furnace blower motor for $20. Rigged up a pully system and motorized it!

Yep, Corona style mill for less than $30 Use a drill motor. You probably already have one of those. I have to buy a stronger one at Harbor Freight for about $29. My small 3/8 inch ones struggled.

I've heard other wise. Milled grains in a sealed bag and kept cool should be good for around 18 months. Longer in a freezer.

Edit: No strike through for editing. 12 months not 18.

Good Info I'll look into making a mill and not sweat ordering it milled for now

I could of sworn I responded to this yesterday but I don't see it...so...

I don't sparge so there is no problem w/my making barley flour. Has been working fine for the past 3 years. I've won my share of medals so others seem to think I produce good beer. I bought mine at the Good Will shop for like $10. It's an Oster and from the number of speeds it must have cost a lot more new.

I used a blender in a pinch when my mill went down with a pound or two left to mill. Yes it works, but there is a nano second between too coarse and too fine for me.

It's also a little bit of an issue in that you have to blend a cup or so at a time, not an issue for smaller batch brewers.

Mounting a corona mill in a bucket and powering with a 1/2" drill works very well for not much money IME.

See the link below in signature for corona mill tips.
