So brewed my first extract beer a couple days ago, mostly everything went well aside from some clumping from the dry extract. Also, completely forgot to pick up a hydrometer before the LHBS closed. But the real problem I have is that I added 6 of 9 lbs of the extract with 15 mins left in the boil without making hop adjustments to my recipe. A couple days later I plugged in the recipe to beersmith and instead of a 70 IBUs I'm looking at 111! For a ~6-7% ABV IPA, this looks like it's going to be severely unbalanced. I know not having the preboil and post boil gravity readings is going to make this a bit inaccurate, but is there any hope this beer won't be a bitter bomb?

I'll be surprised if it's at 111 ibu, ibu calculators are not extremely accurate.my guess is that the actual total number of ibu's are like half that. Ferment it and taste it, you might surprised and like it more than you think you will.

I'd say just go for it. If you want your boil additions are really not to big, so you can reduce your dry hop additions to back off the hop blast... if you want.

I'm not sure I'd call it an IPA with that much wheat in it, but I would sure as hell try it. If you really only had 1.6 of Tomahawk at 60 minutes, you should be fine.

Not sure how you got to 111 IBUs. Or 72 percent efficiency with extract. But I have not plugged your recipe into Beer Smith, so...

Yah it seems a little crazy for the IBUs to be affected that much from extract. The IBUs were at normal levels until I changed the 6 lb extract addition to 15 minutes. Also, the 72 was the default, I'm sure the efficency will be better since it is after all extract only.

And true, not so much a typical IPA, more like a Wheat/White IPA, or just a hoppy american wheat?

Extract beers tend to finish with higher gravities. You may be surprised and will be more balanced than the original recipe.
