I know this has been discussed before, but I was hoping for a way to improve upon my technique.
I made a 11g batch of Haus pale ale by mashing 21lbs of grain in 11 gallons of water. I then added two gallons after removing the grains at the end of the mash. Boiled as usual. I ended up with 11 gallons on the nose.
Of course, my hydrometer was MIA when I did this, so I have no idea what I was looking at for efficiency or OG. Further still, I had never made a batch of this at 5g, so I don't have anything to compare it to, taste wise.
The whole process was completely painless, I have a ratcheting strap to hold the bag, etc. My question is, before I brew this again, will this partial volume mash have any appreciable effect on the numbers? Should I assume that my efficiency was lower than normal, and up the grain bill to compensate?
Thanks.
