Better not to directly heat grain with a hot element unless you want to burn it. Use an element to heat fluids like water and wort.
 
Use the element in a RIMS tube for recirculating, and in the hlt and bk for heating water and boiling the wort. If you are wanting a herms then you will need a coil in the hlt and won't need the rims tube (or 3rd element). Hope that helps
