Just off the top of my head:

Black Sabbath
Velvet Underground and Nico
Songs of Leonard Cohen
Straight Outta Compton
The Clash
Horses - Patty Smith
Wu Tang - 36 Chambers
Funkadelic
Willie Colon - El Malo

That's not even touching Jazz, Brazilian, African, Latin (well, I did get one in there) or all the other sh*t I dig on... might have to dive into the collection!

EDIT: Damn, beat to the punch on the NWA. Nice!

Are You Experienced is pretty good.
Weezer blue album is packed with awesome.
Violent Femmes has a ton of classics on it.
Rage Against the Machine was a good debut album, too.

I was going to say Bat Out of Hell...I thought it was his first but turns out it was his second album.

I also agree with Boston, Velvet Underground and Black Sabbath. All fantastic debut albums.

Oh yeah, and a couple I *think* it's their debut album:

Pod by The Breeders
Meantime by Helmet

damn i can't believe i forgot NWA, every suburban white boy like me ate that **** up.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this thread was Appetite for Destruction, and I agree Led Zep I is great. For the most part I can't really stand rap but when Cypress Hill came out I listened to that album all the time. Kill em' all is a favorite of mine from Metallica and I've always loved Iron Maidens debut album as well, they were a very different band when that came out.

But AfD FTW:mug:

There are some really good ideas on here and I agree with many of them. Boston's debut was brilliant, again way ahead of it's time. I have a hard time with Rush and Maiden, I love both bands, they are just not the same band that became what they are now. Member changes and complete direction changes so I can't go for either of those, however I do like both albums. I would have never though about NWA, but I gotta say (and I can't stand rap), that was hardcore sh*t when it came out and it was cool. Can I put it higher on the list than Zep or GnR? Hell no! Oh yeah, and Sabbath's first, awesome!

To the guy that wondered when GnR and Def Lep became classic rock, as much as I hate to say it, this albums are 20 or more years old. That's classic! Of course by that rational, Zep I should now be an "oldie" not a classic! hahahahaha

Anyway, I was just bored yesterday and wanted to start a thread. Glad this one got some action.

I had a hard time getting into I&W, but I should give it a listen again. Awake is my fav from DT, but I have to be in the right mood to listen to that singing.:)

haha I always liked James LaBrie's voice but as a former musician, if they didn't have singer at all I would still listen to them. Man are they talented!

Yeah no kidding, everyone of them can play the hell out of their instrument, and James is a great singer, just a little over the top sometimes. I always wanted to try and learn the guitar parts but my nubby little fingers never wanted to cooperate:D

Good one! And I forgot about Dream Theater "Images & Words". That was bad ass!

Just got done listening to this, damn good record! Didn't care for Surrounded though, it didn't seem to fit with the rest of the songs. Other than though, there is some great playing on there. Thanks for mentioning this, glad I revisited it.:mug:

Pearl Jam sucks BTW.

Oh no, you didn't open that can of worms. But none of my arguments are that rational anyway.

Pearl Jam "10" is damn fine - every single track.

I agree. Not only a fantastic, but also probably their best. I'm a huge fan of their other albums (even albums like Binaural and Riot Act) but Ten takes the cake. Though one might say that the remixed rerelease is better..

who cares, just my opinion, i actually like VS. better, i own both, prolly the same reason my Uncle says Skynyrd sucks, overplay by the radio.

I&W was their breakout album (and James' debut with them), but Dream Theater's debut was When Dream and Day Unite.

I will nominate said album since it has Ytse Jam on it.

Another:
I Mother Earth - Dig

Oh what a kick ass band they were

I don't know what the best debut album ever is, no one knows.

So, allow me to submit an obscure entry:

Clutch Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes, and Undeniable Truths

As mentioned already, Pearl Jam - Ten, might actually be the best debut ever. Other contenders would be;
-Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine - Released in 1989, it is still musically relevant today and was way ahead of its time.
-Lynyrd Skynyrd pronounced - (leh-nerd skin-nerd)

My bad. I forgot there was an album before James. Ytse Jam is awesome! I remember you posting this video awhile back. Greatness. Everything about this band is greatness!

On another note, I am so glad that no one has mentioned that crappy Nirvana album as the best. Man they suck!! They are definitely my most hated band ever. I would rather listen to the Carpenters!

Oh and Badmotorfinger kicked ass!

+1 for Ten. Top to bottom best hard rock album in the last 30 years.

I saw Pearl Jam in '92. They were the first act on a bill with Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers at Roaseland NYC. During the Smashing Pumpkins set, I got one of their "Cass-singles" handed to me by Eddie Vedder in the crowd.

Ten was a great album. I lost touch with their music after that as it was a little too mainstream (too punk for my own good), but have enjoyed going back through their albums the last few years.

As for best debut albums, I would have to go with Black Sabbath.

I love the Shins mention

Also some other favs
Cage the Elephant (self titled)
Cake- Motorcade of Generosity
The Black Keys-The Big Come up (unbelievable blues rock from a band that started in only 2001
Arctic Monkeys-Whatever People Say I am, Thats What I'm Not
