Just bought a 10 gallon Edelmetall brew kettle, but it leaks like a sieve from the whirlpool port. I've uninstalled and reinstalled nearly a dozen times trying to reset the gasket and all each time in hopes of getting it just right but with no avail. My thought is if I'm having these issues now, I can only imagine they'll persist and possibly worsen over time. Any recommendations on kettles that you've had great success with?

Sorry about the issue! I can tell you that our kettles are guaranteed never to leak. We can make that statement because we do not use o-ring to create a seal. We physically weld ports on to our tanks. This is done at our facility in Milwaukee by our extremely talented welders!

Thanks for the response, I'd be interested in researching your products. Do you sell direct to consumer or through any e-retailers?

Spike sells the best kettles on the market. Fully customizable. Heavier steel than the competition and fully welded. All with excellent customer service and competitive pricing. Absolutely love my spike kettles!

You can save a few buck and check out the scratch and dent at spike. Saved me a bunch of money. Spike is the bees knees.

I have a 10G Spike with a port each for a ball valve and thermometer and I couldn't be happier. Communication and delivery was excellent and I've never had an issue with anything.

I have a SS Brewtech BME 10 gallon kettle and I like it alot. The SS has a built in whirlpool port, and two additional ports. All triclamp. You can't go wrong with that or Spikes. I'd say biggest functional difference is Spikes can be direct fire or induction, the BME kettle is direct fire only. Spikes is more customizable, SS is not.

In regards to this post,

Ive had no problems with my weldless fitting in my setup for about 5 years now... I dont dissassemble the the fittings between each brew session like some people do which I think is kind of silly. same with dissassembling threaded/teflone tape fittings between brews for the same reasons... From what ive read in many threads here , if a person is going to constantly dissassemble everything they are better of with welded TC ports at a higher cost.

Theres a lot of misconceptions and beliefs about what has or even what should be done as far as cleaning and sanitation... For example there are a lot of folks who still clean the hot side of their brewery with starsan which isnt even a cleaner when the process of boiling heats the components up enough to very effectively sterilize them along with all the bugs/bacteria found in your non sterile ingredients like the grain before its boiled....

I have been using Spike Kettles for years with no issues whatsoever and I use mine like a $5 whore on nickel night. In fact, my Blichmann Boiler Makers have been collecting dust since I bought my first Spike.

I would keep working to resolve the leak. Why waste a ton of money on a spike kettle when the edelmetall will work just fine?

Does the pre drilled hole feel loose?
What size hole? Most shops I've seen recommend 13/16".

Are you using Teflon tape? And if so, 5-6 wraps?
You don't need to tighten the seal with a torque wench, hand tighten is just fine.

+1 on the above. Not sure what your whirlpool arm looks like, but a little Teflon tape goes a long way. Also, if you're having a leak around an O-ring, take a close look at the O-ring. I have pinched O-rings from misalignment or over tightening. I keep a couple of spares around.

I think there's a place for disassembly and thorough cleaning and inspection on some frequency for threaded fittings, valves, etc. After every batch is probably overkill, but annually or semiannually, depending on how many brew days you put in. I've seen some nasty stuff in some of my fittings. ;)

I have 2 older generation Spike kettles and they were the best bang for the buck then. Today Spike kettles remain the best bang for the buck IMO and the quality has improved immensely.

My first one was a Concord kettle that Spike customized with welded ports. My second one, obviously not a Concord and the welded ports are much "prettier" and flush on the inside of the kettle that's also thicker material. Both have single layer flat bottoms and I can attest that there's no concern for scorching in the boil.

Now, Spike kettles have a Tri-Clad stepped bottom which helps with trub separation as well as makes them more viable for use as a direct fire MT. All of these improvements while maintaining quality at a very competitive price with excellent customer service...

Buy a Spike kettle, you wont regret it!

I myself would feel terrible scratching and banging those all up carrying them outside to dump grain and cleaning in the kitchen sink.. I know my bayou kettles take a beating and they are not as thick as the spike kettles... If my process was different I would certainly consider them but im always moving things around and sometimes add ports when trying something new...

+1 for spikes. I have a 10G kettle with false bottom. I think I'm going to turn that into a mashtun and buy another with a side pick up tube and whirlpool port to use as a BK possibly with an heating element port for further expansion when I ditch propane

FWIW, my brother in law bought the Edlemetal kettle like yours, and sure enough, his leaks like a sieve too. He took it to his jobsite and a fellow there is going to work on it if possible. I use Blichmanns which I am very fond of, but understand Spike is a heck of a kettle.

Spike kettles are awesome. You get a solid product with excellent quality. Cant go wrong with Spike. Did i mention i like Spike kettles?

I'll second his remarks!

Thirds that remark as well. I just pulled the trigger and had a custom kettle made. 3 ports and a 1.5" TC port on the back for electric brewing. Can't wait to get it. I'll post pictures when I do. I'm excited
