Below grade plumbing fun...

So I want to install a utility sink on the unfinished side of our basement (aka MY side).

The plumbing is exposed, but I'd have to run PVC a bit to get to the drain line, and of course pump the water up to it.

So now I don't just need a sink, I need a drain pump/bucket, check valve, PVC for run, PEX for hot/cold in, and suddenly my genius idea for a sink in my basement is a $500 proposition, and that is if I did it myself.

Sheesh...cost takes the fun out of everything doesn't it?

If the sump was on my side, I would just run a drain hose to it, since I'm only rinsing things and not putting solids of any sort down it.

Well sure, if you want to make it nice. I installed a utility sink in my crawl space, after installing a "doorway" into the space from my garage. I ran water to the sink with a garden hose. I put a party tub under the sink and a submersible pump in the tub. Another garden hose connects the pump to the overhead drain line. I installed a trap in the drain line to prevent the escape of sewer gases. Cheap and functional. It's not pretty, and that makes me like it even more. ...but I don't have to share my crawl space -- it's all mine.

Run a pipe/hose to the sump & cover it with one of these:

While we are talking about shadetree plumbing projects, my basement has a bathroom which empties into one of those sewage ejector system setups. I was thinking of stubbing out the existing water supplies and putting a utility sink on the other side of the wall in the utility area. The utility sink would be right over the ejector system tank.

How ghetto is it to drop the drain line through the lid of the tank? Any better ideas? My thought is I would plumb it in a way that I could remove the sink and cap off the hole in the tank if I ever moved and people balked at my ingenuity.

Good idea, but the other side of the basement is finished, so the wife would not be happy with that ran across LOL.

Actually if I change where to put the sink, there is cold *and* hot water access, and I am much closer to where the drain line starts.

The pump is the biggest expense, but if I want this I suppose that is going to have to be the plan.

BTW, you could drain from a utility tub in your shed by gravity to your lawn. However, if you are draining chemical cleaners and sanitizers, it would be better to pump (or flow by gravity, if possible) into a drain line connected to the sewer system.

During the warm seasons, I use one hose connected my pump that pumps "clean" water (no chemicals) to my "lawn" (trees). If I'm using chemicals, I connect a second hose that flows into the sewer drain line. Water is a precious commodity in So Cal; this may not make sense for you.

95% of my life has been spent in So. Cal. I remember getting a warning once because my sprinklers came on in the rain because I forgot to shut the auto-timer off. I like that setup. I'll have to look at it more and see what I can do. I intended to just drain any water that had PBW in it into buckets and clean water would go to the lawn and such. That's the interim plan at least.
