Good morning folks,

I’m growing first year hops in 15 gallon containers. This is my first year growing hops but I come from a nursery and greenhouse background so I’m quite experienced with growing and propagating various other plants. Being first year plants I was expecting the plants to not produce, however, it looks to me that the side arms are beginning to sends flowers.

Can anyone confirm or deny this for me?

For reference, I’m growing in upstate NY and growing cascade, Columbus, and Cashmere. The picture is of a cascade plant but both the cascade and Columbus are doing the same.

Looks like buds to me. I grew cascade and Northern Brewer. They grew like weeds where most plants wouldn't grow. I didn't grow mine in containers which is even more shocking as I have very sandy acidic soil.

I did have "issues" on the next years if you'd call it that. Initial shoots would sprout and subsequent frosts would kill them. I bet if I covered with a layer of mulch during the frosts they'd be popping as soon as possible.

Sorry I missed your thread. Yep those are indeed lady flowers! Always cool to get some cones in year one.

I’m in the Hudson valley with 4th year cascade and centennial nd second year cashmere. Centennial and cascade have medium sized cones and cashmere have very small cones forming.

Wondering what’s going on here. I have cones forming on the cascade and Columbus hops (2 plants each). That said, one of the Columbus plants look like it’s throwing male flowers as well. That said, some of what look to be male flowers are showing pistils. Could just be my lack of experience identifying them but none of the other plants are doing this.

I've never seen this on my plants, but it certainly looks like hermaphroditic behavior.

It’s certainly strange especially with pistils coming out of what looks like male flowers.

I don’t know if I should snip them when I see them or let it go a few more days to see what they look like.

That is strange…I’d let it go to see what happens. Here is what my cashmere look like right now. The last one is my cascade…4th year and going nuts.
