Hey all,

I just put a second recipe from "Joy of Brewing" into Beertools. in both cases the bitterness was significantly, over 25% higher, than it was in Beertools than is printed in the book. I know different formulas exist for determining bitterness but 25% seems really high.

The recipes were the No Sham Shamrock & the Maibock.

I haven't blown the dust off of my Joys in some time. Do they list the IBU for the hop used or just the total contribution?

Hop IBU yields could have a signifigant variation between crops.

Just the total yield. In the case of the Maibock JOB is 29 IBU Vs 39.8 in BTP. I'll double check my wok when I get home.

okay. This sounds like a yield difference. For example the hops at the time the recipe was written may have had a oil content that was 25% lower than what you are using today.

Make sense?

So, you just adjust your hop quantities down to match that of the recipe spec. and go from there.

The Tinseth method is often reported as being most consistent with lab analysis.

I'm guessing the problem stems from them using lower AA% hops. This doesn't really matter because you're going to have to adjust the hops for the AA% your LHBS carries. So you may adjust the hops from Joy of Brewing to Beer Tools, but then you'll have to possibly adjust it from Beer Tools to the final recipe based on whats available at your LHBS.
