Question about the water amount shown to be added after the boil in beer smith. If you enter in the same recipie in both programs, beer pal will show for example to add 4 gallons of water to sparge with, beer smith shows to add 1 gallon of water to the sparge and add the rest post boil. What are the advantages/disadvantages of these two ways.

Thanks

Is this extract?

What kind of beer are you making? Generally you want to boil as much water as possible. So boil what you can, and top up to 5 gallons.

All grain I probably wouldnt ever add water until I completed overshot my gravity.

This is for all grain recipes. I have always sparged with more water and reached my desired volume that way. I was just wondering why beer smith would show to add the water post boil.

I think its due to setup of your equipment in beersmith, there is option to check to drain mash tun after mash and you may need to change your equipment description in the program, basically BS thinks there is not enough space in your tun to add more water

I use Brew Pal and don't know much about Beer Smith, but, it sounds like the information you have entered may be wrong.
