Ok. I read it. This thread was highlighted so I went here first. My question is why is the upgrade free for those that purchased it "after Feb 2011" I have been using it for almost 4 years now and those that bought it last week will get it for free?

I'm guessing its because you got 4 years of use for your 20 dollars, so you paid 5 bucks a year to use it. The person who bought it in march got 2 months of usage for their 20 dollars, or about 120 dollars a year.

You don't have to agree with their decision to give it at a discounted or free rate to ercent purchases, and I can understand why you'd be a little frustrated, but it makes sense to me.

Just try to look on the bright side and think about all the wonderful recipes you got to make in beersmith that you wouldn't have if you had bought it in march. See, you came out of this ahead! :rockin:

I paid $20 a couple of years ago and I don't think I'm getting the shaft. As a returning customer I'm getting a discount on the preorder, and a very nice one at that I might add.

Beersmith has been a very useful program to me so far and I like the features coming up in the new one, so spending $17 to get an improved version is a good deal.

But if you think it's too much, you can keep using your old version if you like.

Is there a way to look up your key for the "pre-existing user" discount. I don't think I have the key anywhere. Is there a place in the program to look it up?

<Smack>

I spent about a half hour this morning going through old emails. I never thought to see if there was a spot in the program to find it!

It has always been made very clear on the BS website that major releases will only be offered for a full charge. Only the minor updates will be offered for free.

This is the first major version release of the programs history and yet, because so many people b!tched and whined about their $20, the Author has decided to give existing users a discount as a sign of appreciation for their loyalty.

So, who is getting the shaft now?

Sorry, I found my email.....But I do wonder if the key is stored in the program somewhere. I would hope. I have a feeling a lot of folks who have been using it for years have lost their key.

I am not going to beat this to death and said I am going to most likely order it. However, in the years I owned it there was never any updates to the app. So no updates for 4 years then...here it is the "New version" ,although, just an updated version if you look at the screen shots. just some new features were added to the existing program. I am not knocking him for it it is just my opinion.

I am not at my home PC. IIRC, it's either under File > Registration (or License) or shown under an "About" menu item.

sure, from the perspective of a windows user.

But from a developers and a OSX users perspective v2.0 is a MAJOR change to the application.

Should I switch from promash to this? I haven't heard of any plans to update promash.

I wouldn't expect anything from Sausolito period.

As to changing from ProMash to BS v2.0 depends on if ProMash has outgrown it's usefulness for you. For me, the choice was made for me. My copy was buggy. Support became, understandably, inexistent so I switched.

I just made the purchase and this is my first experience with the software. To those of you with previous BS experience...

I'm messing around with it now and am not getting accurate calculus. Off of 9lbs of DME, 1lb of Crystal 40, and .75lbs of table sugar in a 5gal batch, the program is kicking out a 1.017 OG and 1.004 FG yielding a whopping 1.68abv.

uh... any immediate diagnosis on what's up here?

That is your "actual ABV" you have to enter your OG and FG into the recipe for it to calculate. This is for when you actually brew your recipe.

See Estimated ABV for the estimate.
