So as I delve more and more into my homebrew education, I’ve come to the realization that my beer palate isn’t really calibrated. By that I mean I really don’t know if I’m what I’m tasting is malty or hoppy characteristics. I know what I like, but I simply don’t speak the language at this point in order to describe it in the proper terms that would correlate to how the community would describe the same flavors. For example, in my ignorance what I thought was hoppy was more likely just hop bitterness but not hop flavor per se. Does this make sense? What I need is a way to calibrate my palate by correlating what the community describes as flavors (maltiness, hopiness, etc) to store bought beers (BMC, Yuengling, Sam Adams, Blue Moon, etc) that I’m familiar with. Is there a resource that paints flavor profiles for beers?

Doesn't answer you question directly. But you should try to hook up with someone which has some understanding of this. Sharing a few beers and discussing them really helps. And, the more you taste, the easier you'll be able to identify different attributes of a beer.
