I sparged too fast and collected too much(72l) in the BK, the wort was still running dark so I kept on collecting because my first batch I never realised how much u lose suiting the boil and how much the hops pinch. My first batch I finished with 39l @ 5.51% my second batch was 51l @ 3.94%, I realise that this is down to efficiency but is there any way I save this or put it down to experience? Tastes damn good tho ;-)

I misunderstood. I thought you were interpolating ABV pre-fermentation. I don't have any experience restarting a completed fermentation. You may have a really good session beer unless there is someone else to help out.

Sounds to me like you have a great session beer there and there's no need to fuss with it. 3.9 vs. 5.5 means you can have an extra glass when you sit down for a few. If it tastes good, I'd leave it. Just apply what you've learned about sparging/efficiency, etc. to your next batch. Cheers!

Sound good to me, have been thinking I can just hav 15 pints instead of 10, ha ha, it's a strong flavoured jet black stout with chocolate and coffee flavours will post a pic when it's cleared, cheers

I am sure it is not the first "session stout" :D

Figure out your boil-off. Then you know how much wort to collect for the boil. I have to collect just over 7 gallons to end up with just over 5 gallons in the fermenter. Which leave me with just about 5 gallons to keg.

I made a mistake a while back and wound up with a sub 4% beer that, whaddyaknow, was really good. I've been repeating that mistake ever since because I found that I love having one keg of something really special and one keg of a simple 4% ABV session beer. I make the session beer about twice as often as the other one, and that makes for a fine pipeline.

Defo not going to mess about with it, I got greedy collecting the wort because it was still jet black, I've figured it out now tho, like I said it looks, smells and tastes great so can only be better in a couple of weeks and with some fizz, cheers for your help guys

Isn't Guinness about a 4% beer?

I make a low alcohol English Mild fairly often as I like the taste and don't need to get tipsy. There is a place for a low alcohol good tasting beer.

Yup, Guinness is 4.2% I believe.

I agree with you on the mild. I brewed one specifically for this summer. It's finally carbed up and it seems like it's probably not going to make it to June, let alone "The Summer"

I'm not here to tell anyone how to drink, but don't scoff at a lower ABV beer, just because of the ABV. There is definitely a place for a flavorful low ABV beer.

It's kind of funny to think, when I first turned 21, in Iowa, 3.2 beer was the norm.

Here's an experiment for you- invite two people over, pour them both one. Tell one that it's a 4% session stout and the other that it's an 8% export stout. See who acts drunk first. :D

Ha ha, will try that!
