Just got my tubing in for my Brutus and am now looking for a welder. I'm checking Yelp and Craiglist for estimates of how much it will cost to have someone TIG weld it, but thought I'd ask around here if anyone in the Bay Area has used a welder that they'd recommend. Thanks in advance!

Metal Magic, on 333 Kennedy St. Oakland Calif.
(510) 436-5133. From S.F. take 880 south take
the 23rd Av. exit that heads to the Park St bridge
to Alameda. Before going over the bridge
to Alameda the shop is on the water to your right.
If you take a left and right 90 degree turn your on
the Park St. bridge heading to Alameda. At the first
left make a right at the Outboard Motor shop.
Metal Magic is behind the Outboard Motor shop.
Metal Magic is 500' before the Park St. Bridge.
Very easy to get to and leave back to S.F.
Craig Stiles a one man custom stainless fab shop
plus marine boat railings besides welding other materials.
A very tallented man with with a vision. Give him a call before
heading over, plus he's gone from 12-1 PM lunch time. Call first
as he can be in the field working or out getting materials.
I'm house bound with back spasms the welder sits idle.
Shoot me a PM, Carl.

I the past i've seen kegs welded for brewers, Craig knows what to do.
I'm within a few minutes of the shop, give me a call i'll meet ya at the shop.
Mt cell and home phone will be in your PM. Carl.

i saw some awesome work come out of Mork's shop in berkeley when i used to live there.

http://www.waltermork.com/

I worked in a machine shop off Gilman in the early 70's I stopped in at Mork's, they are more into large contract jobs not little pissing around with a keg fittings welded. The time to set up is money lost on larger companies.

Thanks Carl. I'll give Craig a call later today. Hope the back heals quickly.

Today was my first time driving in 9 days, had to stop by Metal Magic to see Craig as my normal visits. Craig said it would take a week turn around. He's a one man shop with many welding and fab jobs ahead of you. Just a heads up. Carl.

when i lived there (less than a block away) in the late 90's, there were plenty of small specialty jobs being done at Mork's.

never hurts to contact them and ask.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of pricing can one expect for welding up a typical single tier brew stand?

So far, I've only received one quote for $750. Seems high to me given that I already have the steel tubing and it's cut, but I've never had anything welded before. Have placed a few other calls and sent pictures/drawings for estimates, but haven't heard back yet.

Is this a iron or stainless stand plus what material dimension, box, wall thickness, angle?

I would bring all your cut material with you so the welder can see what has to be done as well how tight the joints are. Wild gaps will take more time vs tight no gaps. This will give the welder the full picture for a solid estimate. I would rather see a total build vs a shop billing T&M that can kill your wallet. Many shops will think brewers have fat wallets and need them thengoug you big time.

Wow $750?

For that much might as well just buy a stand and get it shipped for free...
