You think that liking adjunct stouts instead of pilsners defines new money? What year is this, 1990?
See bolded below and remember matedog said overly sweet stout and crisp/fresh pilsner.

So you'd order a flawed stout if it had adjuncts over a well made pilsner?

I'm not judging (well sort of) but if that isn't the definition of new money, then I don't know what is.

Jumping in on temescal pilsner talk... I feel like they're probably the best at brewing pilsners right now comparable to Moonlight's lager/pilsner. I regret not buying a four pack because I heard their new IPA was really buttery that I bought over their pils but usually their pilsners sit around in the east bay(caps n taps).

Has anyone had that new Alvarado St. "Monterrey Common" it was good for like first ten minutes but it became undrinkable after a while. My palate coulda been ****** up though cause I was eating matcha snickerdoodle ice cream at the same time..

I really enjoyed that one. Might just be a thing with dark, malty lagers? I recently had the same experience with Bottle Logic's Lagerithm. Just gotta drink them quick!

Tangentially, anyone tried TJ's Petrus Aged Pale Foeder #222? I thought it was quite impressive...

eassssssssssssssssssy now

I feel like they're getting there. I haven't had a bad pilsner/lager from em yet. Their IPAs are always up and down, the popsicle one was good the day it dropped. Probably 2 weeks later a regular brought a can into my bar and it just tasted like creamy weed.

Damn I need to make a trip out to the city to hit Toronado for some Moonlight. I had their handpump bombay by boat IPA and it was really good.
Always craving reality czech or d&t tho.

Thinking about this Golden Road in North Oakland business... do you guys think this will actually be a lucrative endeavor for them? I like to think that more than half of the patrons that currently support Temescal, Good Hop, and Drake's Dealership will already decide not to support GR/ABInBev right off the bat for a myriad of reasons, from anti-bigbeer, to support local, to Golden Road kinda sucks.

I think that the vast majority of people who patronize those places have no idea at all about this. When you're so deep in the craft beer anus it's hard to remember that most people just want to get buzzed and hang out in a cool place.

This^. If it's a cool spot, it'll do really well. We need more of these types of places; beer garden-esque with food trucks and good seating options. There are some great ones in other cities, like "The Lot" in Bend which has food trucks, a few decent beer options, and a cool seating area.

There's also a significant chance they end up with a taplist that's designed to attract the geeks. Unlikely they'll get east bay breweries on board but it could very well be that places like Kern River and the like will be served there. They want your business, regardless of what you buy, so if golden road doesn't sell well they'll load up the taps with whatever does.

If that does happen, and the vibe is cool, not too much to complain about. I always like options when going out.

CORPORATE BEER HAS NO PLACE IN TEMESCAL.

Please read below, share this out, and speak up before Monday!

Sometime this summer, both Arthur Mac's Tap & Snack and Roses' Taproom will open their doors in Temescal. We're excited about what these small craft beer businesses will add to the area and we hope that you'll join us in welcoming them with open arms.

At the same time, something much more sinister is brewing in our lovely neighborhood. The world's largest beer company, AB-InBev (the company behind Budweiser), wants to install a prefab shipping container beer garden on 40th St. They're doing so dishonestly, trying to sneak into Temescal under the guise of Golden Road Brewing—one of their fake craft beer brands. Please don't fall for it. This is a deliberate attempt by an international conglomerate to stifle small business and will be a scar on the face of Oakland's beer scene.

This is not about beer industry competition—we can't wait for more breweries and beer bars to join us here! It's about standing up for small business and for good local beer made through the passion and sacrifice of your neighbors. We urge you to help us by telling AB-InBev/Golden Road to take their business elsewhere.

**See instructions below on how to make your voice heard, and please act before Monday!**

We know it's been a rough week for Oakland, and we realize there are loads of other pressing issues both locally and nationally. So thank you for taking a moment to think about something hitting very close to home. If you have any questions or thoughts, please hit us up in the comments.

Love,
Team Temescal

Here's how to help:
---------------------------------

The planning department is accepting comments on the project until this coming Monday, 4/3. If you live near 40th and Broadway, if you live in Oakland, or if you regularly visit the neighborhood, please consider emailing, writing or calling in.

It just takes a second--write an email!

Any thoughts/concerns about the project are welcome, but in particular the planning department needs to decide whether to:

1) Let them get away with not providing any parking. They're replacing an existing parking lot with a beer garden, so taking away 30 or so spots, and asking for permission to not provide the 5 spots that would normally be required for the project.

2) Let them install shipping container structures rather than a proper building (which normally needs to be at least 12 feet tall).

Here's a PDF with more info about their permit application:

I personally think this is a TERRIBLE look for Temescal. They are just worried that GR will take business away from them. For them to try and say that a business of the same type as them doesn't belong in their neighborhood is asinine to me.

Well, that's another perspective. I saw some pretty upset people in the comment section on FB pointing out that gentrifiers shouldn't dictate who gets to do the gentrifying. I thought that was an interesting take as well. I'm going to support local businesses before corporate businesses any day of the week, but that's just me.

[EDIT: it's also worth noting that the brewery first praises the upcoming new arrivals of some independent craft beer businesses, so one cold argue there's more to their motivation than being worried about competition]

Yeah....I won't be doing that.

It's def not a good look. Focus on making good beer, give me a reason to even want to come to your brewery. Right now I have none bc they're the definition of mediocre.

Exactly, beat them by offering a better experience and better product. Right now I would 100% agree on the mediocre declaration for temescal. I haven only had a few of their beers and none of the wowed me.

I'm saying that as someone who actually likes Temescal too. I think their Pilsners are great (yes I like Pilsners). I spoke with Wade once and he seems like a good dude. I consider Doug (ex-Sante employee) a friend as well. I would venture that this proclamation came from the business side of things and not the people actually making the beer. I would ask the business side to have an ounce of self awareness about the fact that you moved to Oakland about 5 minutes ago and stop trying to pretend like Temescal was magically created as this "lovely neighborhood" upon your arrival. You're a guest so act like one.

Boom, nailed it. I have sadly not had any of their pislners ( I also love pilsners). Sounds like I need to put an ISO out next time they release cans of it.

I guess it's one thing if GR was taking over an existing business, specifically a small beer place, but it's moving into a freaking parking lot. That's a much better use of space. A business shouldn't need to be artificially propped up (ie not allowing competition) to succeed. Basically what chemman14 said, if they can't succeed due to Golden Road, we probably won't miss them that much.

I still hope Temescal thrives and gets more...better. Just went on Sunday and had a nice time. It's a great space and the beer was fine.

I wanted to respond to the post, but wasn't really sure how.

To be fair, they were trying to move in there for a long-ass time, so they're more invested than it might seem.

That said, yeah, I saw that, went "tl;dr", and moved on.

May 5th-9th I'm traveling to the great city of SF, where I hear golden blends abound in every bottle shop and bar, and trips to SARA involve ridiculous traffic and risk of death by landslide. Anybody want to have a GB or somethin? My work thing is near Mission and 4th.

Also where should I eat?
