Philly is very unique in that way. No where else I've lived or spent a lot of time in has anything like that number of restaurants without licenses who allow (free) BYO. One of the things I miss about living there.

There are a few places that allow it here, but the only two I've done it at have already been mentioned, and one of them recently closed! Pakwan is legit, tho. Also, most parks in the city either legally allow alcohol, or don't prosecute FWIW.

It's a thing in Chicago too

I've only ever done it at cheap but delicious Indian places (aforementioned Pakwan, Naan and Curry). Usually with a large group in the middle of a good night out. I wasn't ever sure if it was legal.

Some North Beach Italian places, too

The last one. Not sure if that was B2 or if there was a later one. I miss the uninflected version. It was tasty stuff.
Both batches were infected, including on tap. It was random how they would turn though. I remember back in 2013 (?I think?) I had a draft pour at bar in SF and it was great. Fast forward to later in the week, I'm at perdition in Berkeley (RIP) and it was infected AF. Kegged at the same time I'd imagine. Bottles were like playing a game of roulette.

I definitely remember getting an infected bottle of Heirloom, contacting them on FB, and getting the "Oh, that date isn't infected" brush-off. Pretty vindicating.

But when it was good, it was GOOD. And I would love to have it again. I haven't had Almanac in years.

In the long list of local breweries I do not drink, this is fairly high on the list.

Damn we have some clunkers around.
They fill a void for me in that they offer (relatively) affordable decent to good sours in 375 format. I don't buy them regularly, but often enough. Plus the Alameda tasting room is right across from where the wife and I play soccer.

Ha! We had different experiences. I contacted them about the keg at Perdition, and they sent me:
  • an Almanac glass
  • stickers
  • a bottle opener (it's nice too, wood)
  • and a bottle of one of their sours
  • emailed me back thanking me for helping them keep informed about their product quality

Their beer is pretty awesome when someone else is paying and it's an open bar with free growlers!

Looks like Torpedo Taproom reopened in Berekely (ppl are checking back in via untappd at least). Has anyone been and checked it out post renovation? Considering that one reason they closed down was due to it not being profitable, I would think it would have more fanfare once it reopened.

I've been seeing ads on FB saying they have food now, so there's that.

I walked by it yesterday and it was closed (per usual on Mondays per the sign), but the door was half open and the fridge and gift shop were stocked. The patio looked complete too. Didn't see anything indicating it was temporarily closed.

Good to know, I'll add it back to my list of weekly places to check on untappd to see if anything is worth a visit.
