Random question, but does anyone have a place that they get pork belly from in the east bay? I want to make some bacon, and have heard that Chinese butchers will often have it super cheap, but haven't been to any of them. Last time I got it from some fancy place in Berkeley and it was like $14/lb or something that's more expensive than good-quality pre-made bacon. Of course no one has any prices listed online, so I don't know if Taylor's or something similar would be reasonable.

And yes, I realize this isn't talkpork.com.
I was going to suggest Local Butcher, but I assume that's the place you went to in Berkeley.

Does Sprouts in Oakland have it? They have quality meat.

charliechu might know, we've been discussing sourcing pork recently.

No idea, but usually grocery stores need to special order it (hell, even my local butcher has to) and I'm not on top of things enough to do that this time (I need it this weekend).

ETA: And yeah, it was Local Butcher, I think. Suuuuuuuper expensive on what's supposed to be a cheap cut of meat. I think their cured/smoked bacon was like a buck a pound more expensive than the plain cut, which is just, like, what? Stupid Berkeley.

It should be talkpork, pork FTW

If you're willing to cross the bridge, I can sort you out.

Owner went to Brown, go figure.

Also their sandwiches are delicious but all have mayo on them (which is disgusting). I stopped supporting them bc they wont make one without mayo for me.

Don’t forget Korean butchers too. Both should have it (at least from my experience down here).

You anti-mayo people are baffling to me.

Yeah I asked my friend who is super duper into Korean everything and she said for bacon she wouldn't do the Korean place she uses. So I dunno.

I'm thinking I'll just call up the few obvious places and see who has it and who's cheapest.

You willing to brave 99Ranch?

Is there one in Oakland? I don't have time to go very far for this. But otherwise, why wouldn't I be?

There is a Korean market across the street from the good hop that should have pork belly. They may have it sliced sometimes for kbbq or whole bellies. 99 Ranch over there in Richmond or Concord always has pork belly.

If you're worried about meat quality / non-gmo / sustainable farming / etc, I know some Whole Foods in the bay have started selling pork belly. I believe the Walnut Creek WF was somewhere from 4.95-6.95 a pound I don't remember I just glanced at it and had to get away before buying a **** ton of meat. We have some great butchers locally but all of them will be way more expensive than the usual asian market.

At my local spot in Antioch, pork belly was $1.95 a pound last time I went there.

Found a couple bottles of Nocturn Chrysalis sitting in my local bottle shop. What's the story there? Special beer week distro?

$20 a pop, no limits apparently. Very weird. And this is more of a grocery store than a beer shop, though they have some unusual beer on the shelf sometimes. (Sahalie and La Tache also sitting out for $35 a bottle. Might be tempted...)

Interesting, at that price there is no way its a black market sale as that is the cost from the brewery.

They also had Aurelian Lure last week, assuming this is the same store?

I understood it was releated to Beer Week. Surprised they lasted unthil today, i got the last couple Lure on Sunday.

To wrap up the talkpork.com discussion, pork belly at Taylor's is 3.89/lb. So, uh, yeah I'll be going with that in the future (unless this one turns out terrible or something but given the quality of their sausages I doubt their meat is an issue).

How hard will it be to get a seat at RRBC tomorrow around 1-2 pm? I'll be solo but I really don't want to have to wait, I'm impatient!

There will be a line at 1pm tomorrow for sure. Can't really say how long it will be but I would expect around 15-20 minutes. Sorry, broseph. You can grab some to-go and hit up Moonlight or Beercraft...they're in opposite directions but nearby.

Weekend at 1pm? I'd expect it to be closer to an hour.

Took a short term gig near Alamo sq, off Devisadaro, any spots worth chkn out near by? Went to 4505 meats for lunch today. Solid but $$$
Divis has changed a ton since I used to live there. Not far from haight: Wing Wings, Palmyra (cheap but solid falafel and Schwarma), Little Chihuahua on divis. Popeyes has a dirt cheap deal on Tuesdays, ZFG.

I'm partial to pizza at the mill on Mon and weds. Kung food is surprisingly decent.
