I'm thinking about making a couple heat sticks and I was wondering what kind of limitations I'm going to have on their use. I know just heating up water is easy, but let's say I miss my temp mark in my MLT by a degree or two. Can I stick one in there to bring it up a bit? My MLT is a water cooler style, so will it melt the plastic container if it touches the side under the water? Or maybe it'll scorch nearby grains?

Just wondering what to expect.

If you want to use a heat stick to raise your mash temperature, stir with it. That prevents the mash or the cooler from getting too hot and will give you more uniform heating.

Could I do step mashes like that?
