I have a 50+ gallon barrel that was given to me and I want to age a barleywine in it for a year.

To fill the barrel I was going to brew 10 five gallon batches in the following manner:

Brew a batch, primary ferment for a week, transfer to a barrel, repeat ten times.

Has anyone ever done this? Will the one to ten week lag between the first and last batch addtions have any effect on the finished product?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Wow! That's alot of Barleywine! Plan on the project being somewhat costly. Maybe you could get a group of people together to help & share the bounty with.

I have heard of others using the technique of filling the barrel over time. I have no personal experience with it, but it sounded like it was successful.

The problem I see is that the beer will be exposed to air flor a long time until the barrell gets full. Maybe if you purged the airspace with CO2 each time that would solve the problem

Move to North Western PA and I will brew up some Barley Wine to add to the barrel in exchange for some back in a year!
