Barreling beer after fermenting

Hi I am brewing beer for the first time.

I have followed the instructions for the premium real ale kit that I have by which it says to leave for 24hours to ferment then take a gravity reading then leave it for a few more days to check the reading again, if it is the same then you can transfer.

Is this ideal or should I leave it longer to ferment?

The ale has reduced froth and bubbles but the reading is the same.
