Bad Johnson?

A buddy gave me a used Johnson temp controller. 3 wires; 2 white, one green.

green to ground
whites spliced in on the hot side

compressor won't kick in
70v reading on the circuit

bad controller, right?

one white to hot one to neutral?

try switching the whites

and 70v is not very much either might not be enough to kick over the comp

Hmm... So your Johnson is not put'n out???


The controller is a relay actuator and doesn't affect the voltage in/out. If you're getting 70V, something is wrong somewhere, but unlikely it's the Johnson.

If I measure the circuit without the controller wired in I get 120v.

Are you sure it's a 120V model?

It's benefactor said it was 120v. Unfortunately, there is no model number or anything else on it.

Picture may help. Specifically of the terminal block on the lower right as you are looking at the controller opened up.
But a decent shot of both and the incoming and outgoing wiring would e mo bettah.

So I'm thinking to myself, "Open it up? What good will that do?"

But hey, better to twist a screwdriver than spend $50, right?

It was a wiring issue. One of the whites was connected to ground, the green to one of the leads.

The compressor is now humming away!!
