I'm brewing up a beer for a bachelor party in late February, and was hoping to get some feedback from you fine folks. The bachelor loves IPAs, but we both agreed that we should go for something with a little more mass appeal, so here's my recipe version 1.0 of an easy-drinking (I hope) APA...

Name: Bachelor's Brew
Batch Size: 5.00 gal Style: American Pale Ale (18B)
Boil Size: 5.70 gal Style Guide: BJCP 2015
Color: 5.3 SRM Equipment: My BIAB
Bitterness: 40.6 IBUs Boil Time: 60 min
Est OG: 1.053 (13.1° P)
Est FG: 1.012 SG (3.0° P)
ABV: 5.5%

Ingredients:
8 lbs 8.0 oz Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM)
1 lbs Vienna Malt (3.5 SRM)
12.0 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 15L (15.0 SRM)
0.3 oz Citra [14.1%] - Boil 60 min
0.5 oz Citra [14.1%] - Boil 15 min
0.5 oz Amarillo Gold [8.0%] - Boil 15 min
1.0 oz Amarillo Gold [8.0%] - Boil 0 min
1.0 oz Citra [14.1%] - Boil 0 min
1 pkgs Safale American (DCL/Fermentis #US-05)
0.5 oz Amarillo Gold [8.0%] - Dry Hop 5 days
0.5 oz Citra [14.1%] - Dry Hop 5 days

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

I wouldn't change a thing!

Edit: Didn't notice the Citra at 60. I agree with using a general bittering hop for that - better to save the Citra for late additions. Otherwise, I like it.

I've never personally experienced it, but hear tell citra tends to be a bit "catty" when used for bittering. Personally I'd use something like magnum or nugget for your 60 min addition, otherwise it looks like a fantastic apa

Great feedback, thanks! I have some Magnum in the freezer.

Thanks for not inviting me...with all those hops Id have to drink soda.

Hopefully everyone loves pale ales. I would have done an amber or maybe a golden strong at 6% resonantly but looks like a good pale ale.

On a relatively unrelated note... Anyone know why Amarillo is listed as Amarillo Gold in Beersmith? Are they the same thing?

Personally not a fan of citra, and also 40 IBU's is still probably too much for the BMC drinker so I would just make the IPA the bachelor wants and not try to go down the middle with it.

Here's the slightly tweaked version that I'll be brewing this weekend. The biggest changes are that I scaled it up to 5.5 gallons and changed the bittering hop to magnum. Thanks for the feedback, folks!

Name: Bachelor's Brew
Batch Size: 5.50 gal
Style: American Pale Ale
Color: 5.2 SRM
Bitterness: 38.6 IBUs
Boil Time: 60 min
Est OG: 1.053
Est FG: 1.011 SG
ABV: 5.43%
Mash temp: 152 F

Ingredients:
9 lbs 4 oz Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM)
1 lbs 1.6 oz Vienna Malt (3.5 SRM)
12.8 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 15L (15.0 SRM)
0.4 oz Magnum [12.1%] - Boil 60 min
0.55 oz Citra [14.1%] - Boil 15 min
0.55 oz Amarillo Gold [8.0%] - Boil 15 min
1.1 oz Amarillo Gold [8.0%] - Boil 0 min
1.1 oz Citra [14.1%] - Boil 0 min
1 pkgs Safale American (DCL/Fermentis #US-05)
0.55 oz Amarillo Gold [8.0%] - Dry Hop 5 days
0.55 oz Citra [14.1%] - Dry Hop 5 days

But we both agreed that we should go for something with a little more mass appeal

Just a couple nit-picky points here:
1. In my experience, the most disliked style of people who aren't craft beer enthusiasts is a pale ale. "It's too bitter! :( " "Ugh I hate hoppy beers! :( "
2. I'm gonna second slym2none's post:
Psh - it's his birthday, brew up what he likes. The rest are just hangers-on.

**** 'em. They may be your/his superbros, but don't trust anyone who says they don't like an entire style. It's all beer and it will eventually get you drunk, guaranteed. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Anyway, recipe wise, I would consider increasing the dry hop amount by an ounce or two on either side, and increasing the time to 7 days if you have it. On the other hand, the revision looks pretty good! Let us know how it turns out!

I just wanted to mention that I really like this beer. If you are looking for an easy-drinking, slightly fruity/citrusy APA, this is a nice choice.
